I purchased this cushion from another web site other than Amazon. Our 8 month old, that was starting to crawl, has been so fascinated with the brick hearth we have and would keep crawling over to it. I was very concerned that he would bump his head, and getting tired of constantly picking him up and setting him down away from it. This pad has been a great solution! It's made of a very sturdy, rubbery material that is a half inch thick. I like that it can fit many different lengths too. You get two corner pads, and then a long pad for the middle that needs to be cut down to whatever size you need. You have to be very careful to cut it exactly--and not cut it too short! It comes with two different roles of tape: an adhesive tape, and carpet tape. You can choose to just let the pad rest on your hearth, or actually tape the pad to your hearth. I had read comments that the tape did not stick very well, but the directions DO indicate that the tape requires 8 to 10 hours to completely bond. I assembled this at night so that it wouldn't be messed with until morning. I have not had any problems. The only reason I did not give this five stars was a bit for appearance--and I don't know how they could make this better. But, unless you're EXTREMELY anal about how you put this together, it won't look very "neat" or professional. I was very much trying to align the seams properly and it's still not perfectly to my liking. However, it definitely is not a huge eye sore and I'm more concerned about protecting my kidlet than the appearance of it. It definitely well protects and I would highly recommend it to others.
